How to Share Your Personal Philosophy

Panel three is a direct quote of something I said to one of my supervisors. He didn't seem impressed.

Instead of just lamely thanking you yet again for using my Amazon Affiliate links  (USUKCanada), I'm going to start highlighting various products I think you'd enjoy. I'm starting with Savage Chickens: A Survival Kit for Life in the Coop by Doug Savage. It's a very funny collection of very funny comics by a very nice guy ... who is also funny.

All the comics are drawn on Post-It Notes, by the way, so that's something!

The link above was the US affiliate link. Here are the links for the UK and Canada.

The site redesign is a tinkering work in progress. Comics should be displaying at the normal size (600x600) now. Please let us know if there's something seriously out of whack for you.

Panel 1 is one of the better examples of how the straight-laced captions and the more offbeat dialogue work together to create hilarity. Panel 4 is just plain funny. Loved this one.

I don't mind the new site, but having the comic on the right of the screen is really strange for me. I find it much harder to read than if it were on the left, or centred.

Just to let you know!

I like the new site design, really nice looking. One little thing though. Under the older comics (ie not the latest comic) where you have "Previous Instructions" and "Next Instructions" the order of them is a little counter-intuitive (Next should surely be on the right and Previous on the left?)... Or is that just me?

Not just you. But that's how they've been since we've been at Squarespace. We're still trying to figure out how that was programmed 3 years ago, so they can be changed. :) ~Missy

Panel three is, hands down, your most brilliant creation.

Re: site design - I'm losing the right side of the screen viewing on my netbook (1024x600).

Cheers. Love your work.

Both the content box and the sidebar have been greatly narrowed; hopefully all should fit now. Thanks! ~Missy

The third panel is always the best. I love Basic Instructions. Too bad I can't buy the books, I don't have an international credit card.

When you say the site design is a work in progress, you mean it! I was just about to say that everything seemed a bit large (and therefore went of my screen), but I refreshed and it looks great now!

July 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKih-Oshk

Awesome. Thanks! You've clearly got a great group of testers :-)

I'd like to second the notion that having the comic off to the right is awkward, but I otherwise like the change. Also, never change the BI logo; it's still awesome.

Note from Scott: Well, that's the thing. The logo (which I think may be the single best thing I ever came up with) really had no roll in the last site. It was only displayed small, in the background, and only showed up if you had a wide monitor and a large window open. Otherwise, the logo wasn't there. I wanted to use it as the main site ID (as I do in the new design) but if I made the logo large enough to be legible, it forced the comic down lower and made you have to scroll to read it. Really, the whole reason for the new site layout and the tool bar on the left is to make the logo more prominent.

A wonderful comic as usual!

I recommend moving the "Previous Instructions" and "Next Instructions" buttons above the Author Comments, so that one doesn't have to scroll and search for these buttons if one is reading several comics in a row.

panel 3 is the best.
I almost wish I disliked my work so I could start doing this.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRod

I agree that the stuff on the side should go on the right side, it just feels really awkward the way it is now.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFranpa

Is it possible to either get a scrollbar on the bottom or some other way to put the Comic on the left or center? It's quite awkward being on the right-hand-side.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterThe Chosen One

Great new comic and lay out! Thnx to both!

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterreader

But every word I read is one step closer to having to wait for the next comic... :(

Looks great on my iPhone, btw.

One little tip to help Scott and Missy, If you leave a comment regarding usability/viewing experience, please share your browser and version (if known - ie8 at work, Chrome at Home).
@Scott//Missy - Just curious if you have any analytics regarding which browser is used most often by page loads?

I like the new site design. Good work. Great comic, too!

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDrowlord

Great job on the site design. One nit I have to pick - in the little blurb under the comic, links are indistinguishable from normal text. Especially where they are SPONSOR links you may want to tweak your css (or whatever you use) so that they're a different color / underlined / SOMETHING.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBobman

Love the new site layout. It's a more modern look and looks less cluttered.

Great comic as always.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterThestas

I hate change! Put this back the way it was!

(I'm afraid . . . . )

BTW - I've been a fan of Savage Chickens since I found it a couple of weeks ago. Very original.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPaddy

good work with the new design

good and clean as always and now your logo have more visibility

but the next/previous buttons could be switched one with the other... but it is like all blogs are... i have no problem with this...

thanks for your very good work!

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDarth GTB

@Bobman

The links are in Black font while the regular text is in a gray colour. I will say though, that the links should be more distinguishable. (Firefox 14.01)

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFranpa

I love the new layout! Everything looks so clean and pretty.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmaranth

this new layout is really easy on the eyes, I think it's a great change. agree with previous posters about the fwd/bk thing - but other than that, a remarkable new setup. good on you.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteral

This site is so sexy now. It reminds me of sex.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

I can't cope. This is more terrifying than the annual copyright notice update.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoshua

Just another vote: love the comic, like the site redesign, yes PLEASE add next and previous buttons above the comic for less scrolling. Another set below the author note is useful too, for those times when you want to read the note. :) And I also didn't catch the distinction between the links and the rest of the text at first glance, some additional formatting (even just bolding) would be nice. And yes, the logo is awesome. :)

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrobin

In time, I will get used to the comic's new home on the right and will wonder why it ever bothered me.

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJim

Ooh, redesign, nice.

As long as you're working on the site, I thought I'd share my suggestion:
One thing I noticed a while ago, and which is still here in the redesign: If I turn off JavaScript in my browser, the 'Next' and 'Previous' links are the names of the next and previous comics, instead of the more generic 'next comic' and 'previous comic'. I'm not entirely sure why that was implemented, but personally having the comic titles there seems like an improvement.
If you're gonna dive into the site's code to figure out the 'previous' and 'next' position reversal, maybe you could look into that too?

Note from Scott: Yeah, that's a deliberate choice on my part. It's just that some of my titles are so long, and people don't necessarily understand that the title they're looking at there is the previous comic.

Excellent!

Scott:

I am not sure how many comments you want to receive about the new site design or not, but here are my comments:

1. Generally, I like the look of the new design. The color mix is nice.

2. Your logo on my screen seems smaller and more blurry than it has in the past. It appears almost as if it is a low-res version. The actual comic itself looks sharp and well detailed.

3. The red in your logo is a nice touch.

4. It was a bit disorienting to see the comic on the right side initially, but that will become the "norm" within a few weeks.

As always, a wonderful comic!

Love the new site!

I'm going to start highlighting various products I think you'd enjoy.

Just so long as you don't start highlighting some of the "interesting" things your readers buy!
