How to Ask for Help

Just a reminder, my third book, “The Curse of the Masking-Tape Mummy” officially comes out in March, but my publisher will have copies available for delivery before Christmas. You can pre-order it now! If you do, you’ll be entered into a contest, the prize of which is to appear in a Basic Instructions comic, probably insulting Rick (Note: contest not open to Rick).

I’m just ridiculously proud of this book. It’s bigger than the first two (150 pages) and has a color section containing special, original content that defies description.

Can I just say how much I love the fact that Rocket Hat slowly migrates out of frame every time he makes an appearance in BI? The subtlety of Bond, with the energy yield of Slim PIckens. Classic!

Friends with the Titanians… He really gets around.

[Probably meant "And _they_ don't want you dead". Maybe. (That's not a grammar remark! Just intent…) Feel free not to post!]

...Rocket Hat? Say it ain't so...

October 6, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterProb

"And you don't want you dead"
Oh Scott..

Still, I love these superhero comics of yours.. :)

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterG

There's a "you" which I believe should have been "they" in panel 3.

The preorder sounds sweet, but ordering form overseas will not only cost me import duty, the postal service also tacks on a very hefty fee (~$25), so I'll wait until it's available in the EU. On the brighter side, the desk calendar has just shipped.

Love the way Rocket Hat slides out the frame.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSlartybardfast

Perhaps panel 2 should have ended with "Them's the breaks!"?

Moon Goon #1 is a model bureaucrat. He gives the same feeble effort day in and day out.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterByron Black

Does anybody else read the moon emperor's lines with the voice of the Monarch? Or is that just me?

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJames

It's always a good thing to be consistent. That's not to be confused with being regular, which is also important, but... the details are unimportant!

Great comic Scott! Reading this from the hospital after the birth of my daughter earlier this week, so thanks for another bright spot in my day!

Got my copy ordered.
You start my morning off with a laugh every day. Thanks!

Typo? Third panel "and you don't want you dead"

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterA

you / they ???? almost first ¡HA!

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos Castillo

My word. You lot are quiet today. Have I missed something?

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPaddy

I liked this one. I'd tell you why, but THE DETAILS ARE UNIMPORTANT!

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterProfessor

...Huh. I have noticed that he doesn't talk or move, but I just now realized something. You've only ever drawn Rocket Hat one time, haven't you? That single, solitary position is the only one in which he's ever seen.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterX

"special, original content that defies description"
Perhaps it's just resenting you for calling it special?

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVelli

HELLOOOOOOOO! Is anybody out there? The lack of comments has me concerned, since this is a great strip and the comments often add to the entertainment. Must just be moderator delays.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermcinsand

awesome. evil rick needs a haircut

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjaeddu

Any thoughts on making “The Curse of the Masking-Tape Mummy” available as an ebook?

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShawn

Is that intentional irony at the end? The only panel without punctuation?

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBobogoobo

Unless it is not "bigger" and does not have a color section, then it will have not defied description.

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClamdigger

I can't wait to see your baldness in all of its colored glory!!

October 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBayoDC

The first strange comic in a very long time. "And you don't want you dead, like the Emperor does" ‽ Grows on you on the fourth parsing, though.

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDante

If I win, do I get to write my insult about Rick?

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShaku

OMG! click the book link, it takes you to the order page BUT ALSO there's a pic of the bonus content that is a totally sexed up version of rocket hat!
oh yes, I've ordered my copy, I'm dreaming of the new RH as we speak....but the details are unimportant

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermaribethann

Not at all. Rocket Hat doesn't want Rocket Hat to be dead. The Moon Emperor does.

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThalia

I got that "you don't want you dead" deal right away. I can see why it's confusing to some. Scott, you need more literate readers! Or maybe more illiterate readers (as I). But I digress. Most BI strips are an LOL in every panel, and this one absolutely succeeds. LOLx4.

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBobbo

Did the pre-order. I am sure the first two books I bought from Scott with his actual autograph on the book will be worth millions in the future. Oh and the bonus comic that came with the book will even be worth more I am sure. Soon I will be able to retire when I sell them.

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAC

Maybe the drawing/speech bubble combo is too confusing for non-Moon-Men to understand, but it's really simple: Henchman is pointing at the Emperor, but is actually talking to Rocket Hat who's out of the frame. And the Emperor is addressing Rocket Hat directly.

October 8, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterd00d

Guys, I'm pretty sure it IS supposed to be "you don't want you dead". It highlights the absurdity of the Emperor asking RH for help, and sets up the following panel.

October 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBWM

Those saying it should be "they don't want you dead"...I think Scott said exactly what he meant to say with that.

It is a difference between the Emperor and Rocket Hat: The Emperor wants Rocket Hat dead, but Rocket Hat does not want Rocket Hat dead. So, "you don't want you dead" is exactly what he meant, I think.

Note from Scott: I did mean "You don't want you dead", but I shouldn't have had the Moon-Minion face the emperor as he said it. He should have faced Rocket Hat. It caused confusion the way I did it.

October 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaurel Raven

Now I understand the "you-you" third panel. I'm such a Rick sometimes.

October 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJL

"You don't want you dead..." OK, took me a nano-second or two, but IT DOES MAKE PERFECT SENSE!!! Stop telling Scott he made a typo, it says exactly what Scott meant:
Goon is discussing the differences between the Emperor and Rocket Hat. One of those differences is that the Emperor wants Rocket Hat dead; Rocket Hat does not want Rocket Hat dead. Since the Goon is addressing Rocket Hat when he says this, "You don't want you dead, like the Emperor does" makes total sense.
If it said "they", as some have suggested, that would mean Goon was meaning the Titanians; that would be a complete non-sequiter, since it immediately follows the Emperor bringing up the subject of the differences between himself and Rocket Hat.
NOW do you understand???

October 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRichard

That's not a typo, people. "You don't want you dead" is correct. He's saying that Rocket Hat does not want himself to be dead, while the Emperor wants Rocket Hat dead. Geez.

October 11, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBill

Why does everyone seem to think the 'you' is out of place? The emperor is talking about differences between Rocket Hat and himself. Rocket Hat doesn't want Rocket Hat dead, unlike the emperor. Pretty straight-forward really.
And as always, amazing comic Scott. You certainly have the virtue of consistency yourself.

October 15, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterberuuu

Ok, I get it. "And you don't want you dead" does make sense. The "you" is Rocket Hat, and of course he doesn't want himself dead, unlike the Emperor who does want Rocket hat dead.

I was expecting it to mean the Titanians didn't want Rocket Hat dead because they are friends. But no, this is about the differences between the Emperor and Rocket Hat, per the Emperor's declaration that he and Rocket Hat have differences.

Oops. Nevermind then, I apparently made a wrong turn at Albuquerque. :-p

October 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThom

I don't think it was a typo. He was pointing out Rocket Man and the Emperor's differences, and one of them was that Rocket Man doesn't want to be dead, while the Emperor wants Rocket Man dead. And since he was talking to Rocket Man, then "you don't want you dead" makes perfect sense.
