And now I know that the person in panels 1-3 is a woman.

November 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

I'd say FIRST, but I guess the moderator (Missy?) is probably asleep....

November 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDavo

Is that the first time we've ever been told her name? I think it is.

Note from Scott: It is. Her name's Kate, and she's named after my friend who originally posed for the drawings.

November 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick

To be honest, I always thought that was another reincarnation of Ric

November 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDiemo

I also did not know Kate was a woman until now.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTelanis

But we will never know the name of Mullet-boss, will we?

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBWM

I love your comics and all, but I thought you'd be above the whole sterotypical "coworker named Jenkins" thing.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMarc

The real title of this cartoon should be "If a woman feels insulted a man can't win"

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBrother Random

Good to know I'm not the only one seeing her as a man all this time.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJoakim

And the shaggy haired guy (Panel 4) is called Jenkins. Another name to a face.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJon

@ Jonathan

Me too. Ha!

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMoon

Personally, I hope Mullet-boss never gets a name. Mullet-boss is perfect. And this comic is hilarious, mainly because it's so true.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

you guys are dicks. it's always been obvious shes a woman.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterchordiesreturn

@ Diemo Now that would be an interesting twist. All of the characters are actually Ric's many incarnations.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKirby-oh

You changed the ladies name from Mary to Kate.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGregory Bogosian

What are you all on? I knew that was a woman this whole time!

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFriendly Floyd

I also have wondered if that was a woman. I was pretty sure it was. But she does look a little like Rik. Funny comic.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKrisL

that's been a woman this whole time?

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterwait

So all this time Scott was a man? This is the first I've heard of it.

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSmonson

OK, at this point I think we can all blame Scott for drawing Kate in a way that makes her look like a man. (I thought she was one too)

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Huh. For the record, I knew she was a woman this whole time. Yay, name! (Great comic, Scott!)

November 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCassiSu

Funny, I could always tell Kate was a woman

November 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHeadley

what's that ? It's Pat !

November 27, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjames yeamans

Nice to have a name. I always thought she was Phyllis from 'The Office"

November 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPhil

@ Phil: I see the resemblance!!

November 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterChare

I've had friends who, when shown a drawing of a slim person in a strappy tank with long braids, say "Oh, is that Nash (short haired male character who always wears a suit)?" I would not take it personally, even if I were Kate.

November 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterIrene

I had always figured Kate's name would be Pat...

November 28, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbill

If I remember correctly, I think the mullet-topped boss's name is "Clyde." Way back, he appeared on the cover of a travel brochure that said "Reno is for Clydes."

November 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDerelict

BTW, did Kate even move an iota in the first two frames from the "How to Deal with the Little Things That Really Bother You" episode?

November 28, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbill

I'm really surprised at how few people realized Kate was a woman. Not only does she look like a woman, there have also been several comics where she has been referred to as female.

Also, I got a reply from Scott again! I feel like a Jedi among droids =)

November 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterPatrick

Up until today, I thought it was a dude. Its Ric with more hair and a chunkier torso. I mean there is no "chest". And you could not call the face feminine.
Totally a dude.

November 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBarnz

Yeah, I had an epiphany at one point, probably about two years ago, that female coworker and Rick were different people, so I've known for a while. People ragged on me for observing it at the time. Every time I see her, literally years at this point, I still think she looks too much like Rick.

November 29, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDrowlord

Your people look like people, I can't tell them apart.

November 29, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDArtagnon

Is it just me or do your characters seem to be getting fatter?

December 7, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMadison

That's a woman?!

December 7, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSpace_Dog

A: she is so obviously a woman
B: isn't it funnier if you're not quite sure?

December 10, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterg33k

I'm going over some of the comics from 2010 to avoid doing my schoolwork, and I just wanted to say: I've ALWAYS known that Kate was a woman, and a pleasant looking one at that. :)

Also, I wish people would remember that these characters are posed for by actual people, people who's feelings might get hurt if they decide to read the comments.

That said, hilarious strip, and I love the final panel. XD

December 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCally

I definitely knew Kate was a woman. Not suspected... not probably... definitely knew. I wonder if the confusion is somehow geographically/regionally relevant.

Also, this comic made me laugh.

December 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

i also thought she was Rick, up until this point

March 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDestructicon

When I introduce people to Basic Instructions, I start them off with this comic.

(Btw, Kate totally looks like a woman.)
