I've had friends who, when shown a drawing of a slim person in a strappy tank with long braids, say "Oh, is that Nash (short haired male character who always wears a suit)?" I would not take it personally, even if I were Kate.
If I remember correctly, I think the mullet-topped boss's name is "Clyde." Way back, he appeared on the cover of a travel brochure that said "Reno is for Clydes."
I'm really surprised at how few people realized Kate was a woman. Not only does she look like a woman, there have also been several comics where she has been referred to as female.
Also, I got a reply from Scott again! I feel like a Jedi among droids =)
Up until today, I thought it was a dude. Its Ric with more hair and a chunkier torso. I mean there is no "chest". And you could not call the face feminine. Totally a dude.
Yeah, I had an epiphany at one point, probably about two years ago, that female coworker and Rick were different people, so I've known for a while. People ragged on me for observing it at the time. Every time I see her, literally years at this point, I still think she looks too much like Rick.
I'm going over some of the comics from 2010 to avoid doing my schoolwork, and I just wanted to say: I've ALWAYS known that Kate was a woman, and a pleasant looking one at that. :)
Also, I wish people would remember that these characters are posed for by actual people, people who's feelings might get hurt if they decide to read the comments.
That said, hilarious strip, and I love the final panel. XD
I definitely knew Kate was a woman. Not suspected... not probably... definitely knew. I wonder if the confusion is somehow geographically/regionally relevant.

And now I know that the person in panels 1-3 is a woman.
I'd say FIRST, but I guess the moderator (Missy?) is probably asleep....
Is that the first time we've ever been told her name? I think it is.
Note from Scott: It is. Her name's Kate, and she's named after my friend who originally posed for the drawings.
To be honest, I always thought that was another reincarnation of Ric
I also did not know Kate was a woman until now.
But we will never know the name of Mullet-boss, will we?
I love your comics and all, but I thought you'd be above the whole sterotypical "coworker named Jenkins" thing.
The real title of this cartoon should be "If a woman feels insulted a man can't win"
Good to know I'm not the only one seeing her as a man all this time.
And the shaggy haired guy (Panel 4) is called Jenkins. Another name to a face.
@ Jonathan
Me too. Ha!
Personally, I hope Mullet-boss never gets a name. Mullet-boss is perfect. And this comic is hilarious, mainly because it's so true.
you guys are dicks. it's always been obvious shes a woman.
@ Diemo Now that would be an interesting twist. All of the characters are actually Ric's many incarnations.
You changed the ladies name from Mary to Kate.
What are you all on? I knew that was a woman this whole time!
I also have wondered if that was a woman. I was pretty sure it was. But she does look a little like Rik. Funny comic.
that's been a woman this whole time?
So all this time Scott was a man? This is the first I've heard of it.
OK, at this point I think we can all blame Scott for drawing Kate in a way that makes her look like a man. (I thought she was one too)
:D
Huh. For the record, I knew she was a woman this whole time. Yay, name! (Great comic, Scott!)
Funny, I could always tell Kate was a woman
what's that ? It's Pat !
Nice to have a name. I always thought she was Phyllis from 'The Office"
@ Phil: I see the resemblance!!

I had always figured Kate's name would be Pat...
If I remember correctly, I think the mullet-topped boss's name is "Clyde." Way back, he appeared on the cover of a travel brochure that said "Reno is for Clydes."
BTW, did Kate even move an iota in the first two frames from the "How to Deal with the Little Things That Really Bother You" episode?

Your people look like people, I can't tell them apart.
Is it just me or do your characters seem to be getting fatter?
That's a woman?!
A: she is so obviously a woman
B: isn't it funnier if you're not quite sure?

Also, this comic made me laugh.
i also thought she was Rick, up until this point
When I introduce people to Basic Instructions, I start them off with this comic.
(Btw, Kate totally looks like a woman.)
