That last panel reminds me of Sonic 3. To get to the level select menu, you had to enter a code during the opening animation leading to the title screen. Meaning you had about a half a second to press Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up and have all of those register properly.
I completely agree with you on the whole 'beat up the helicopter. it's easy!' part of the walkthrough. I always read walkthroughs and they act like even the hardest task is simple. The most annoying part is when they skimp on the details because they think it's self-explanatory.
I thought maybe he was talking about Viewtiful Joe or Devil May Cry 2, since those are the only games I know of where you actually have to beat up helicopters as opposed to shooting them.
My guess is that would be "Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction" that he's playing, aside from the fact that Mercenaries didn't have difficulty levels; I wish it did have higher levels of difficulty, because I played through that game so many times that I could probably do it in my sleep.
My next guess is that this refers to the helicopter in the "Acid Queen" mission at the Chemical Weapons Plant in the far NE corner of the North Province?

No you didn't. All you had to do is grab the vines in the first level then input the code. You had the whole level to get the code right.
