How to Understand Things for What They Really Are

I don’t know if there is a “Which Character from House of Cards Are You?” quiz, and I don’t know what character from that show you’d actually want to be. I do know that there is a “Which Character from Basic Instructions Are You?” Quiz. I also don’t know which character from my comic you’d actually want to be.

And now it’s time for your third chance to win a signed copy of the new edition of Off to Be the Wizard (Magic 2.0). In addition to that book, the prize package will also include the Basic Instructions 2014 Box Calendar, and a signed copy of a book by a different author. This week, the bonus book is You, by Charles Benoit.

You can enter below by friending Off to Be the Wizard on Facebook, following me on Twitter, or by leaving a comment on this post answering a simple question. (FYI, last week there was some confusion because only those who entered could see the question. For the record, the question is "Do you prefer paper or e-books, and if if it e-books, what format?")

Sadly, the offer is only open to people in the United States. Shipping costs, what can I say? The contest closes on, April 13th at 12am, then a new give away with a different bonus book will begin. Thanks, and good luck!

Very nice, Rocket Hat Indeed.

I prefer digital, because I really like having immediate access to all of my books. I also prefer Kindle format, because the DRM is easy to remove. As Lythande said above, I just don't trust Amazon (or other sellers) to not take my books back from me. I don't share my ebooks or do anything else nefarious.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMichael Weinmayr

Some books I like to have a hard copy. Usually ones I know I'll Love. Others I care less about I get digital, because usually they cost less. I have a Nook so I'm fine with just about any format, except kindle format I guess, but I can read kindle books on my phone too so...

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJeshka

Paper. There's something about holding the physical book.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Obviously, I am Rocket Hat. But then, isn't everybody?

BTW, I still read paper, but increasingly, I use my Kindle.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Obvious

Which House Of Cards character are you ? Check these for guidance:

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMike

I don't have an ereader so I prefer to read books on paper. If no other option is available a computer screen works, but not as well.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJessamy

I like paper because I can't afford an e-reader and there are no places to buy used e-books.

Probably not the answer you were looking for.

Also, apparently I am Rocket Hat. Woo.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHoney

Paper. If I'm going to actually pay for something, I want it to last forever without having to worry about it every time I upgrade platforms.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

I prefer paper for longer books, and e-books for short stories and essays. I use the Kindle app on my phone, or PDF on my desktop PC.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCurt

I would like to say I prefer paper, because I do, but I generally buy more ebooks. I do know I prefer Google Play's format, whatever that is.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter=David

eBooks are all I read. I love carrying all my books on my phone. I prefer Kindle, but I've used Overdrive when Kindle format isn't available.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMark

I prefer digital - Kindle. The only drawback is that it's easier for the wife and kids to ignore my book suggestions, like "go read Off to be the Wizard!"

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGreenEgg

I just want everybody to know that I am Rocket hat.

/You should take this quiz to see who you are!! :-D

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMoon

Until a few months ago I always thought paper. But there's an unbuilt bookshelf staring at me, and books still in boxes, and my phone doesn't have such issues. So, ebook!

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPaul

E-book if it's something I need to read NOW, otherwise I have to go paper. People like to say digital media is all about efficiency, but really it's more about impatience.

I refuse to be Rick but then I would fail at that too.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbigjimsmith

I got The Emperor of the Moon. So I am kinda worried about the preponderance of Rocket Hats.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

I got Scott, but sadly, without the "Share to Facebook" option simplified down to a button I couldn't be bothered to broadcast my simultaneous shame/pride to my "friends".

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDave

Paper is the clearly superior choice

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDex

Paper. Also, I'm Rocket Hat. I'm somewhat embarrassed to say how happy that makes me.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPaula

Paper, for sure.

Love the "inexhaustible resource" remark--social commentary at its best!

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBig Al

I use a "traditional" ereader (i.e. non-backlit, non-touchscreen) upon which nearly all graphics look terrible. The occasional small photo is fine, but that's it -- maps in fantasy novels are especially bad!

Therefore, I like digital formats, but the presence of anything visual will make me buy print instead.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGeeni

I should be a digital guy, but I've actually only ever purchased one non-free digital book: the first edition of Off to Be the Wizard. Otherwise, I still like holding a book in my hand. Weird that I work in tech and hate printing things out because it wastes paper and ink.

I took the test and it told me I was MacraMayhem with a dusting of Mr. Everywhere - obnoxious and making very little impact on the world that's not sound-related. Am I the only one?

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTom

There's nothing like holding a fresh book in your hands. There is also nothing like the smell of ancient paper that has been handled a thousand times.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTeve Torbes

E-book, Kindle.

I have way too many friends who are constantly doing those "quizzes."

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRedshift

I couldn't be prouder to be 'The Emperor of the Moon'!

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTimP

Paper. I like stuff. And I'm old.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJustin

I like the feel of paper... But that's me!

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbyevad

Paper? No way. Rock. Good old rock.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHazy Dave

Yes! I took the quiz and I am Rocket Hat!!!

I have come to prefer ebooks as I can carry hundreds of books in my pocket. Preferred format is Kindle.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDoctor

What do I do if the result of the quiz is that I am like Rick from "Basic Instructions"??

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBird of Prey

I like both. If pressed, I probably have a slight preference for digital, simply because my Kindle is amazingly convenient. And I find that I get fewer people annoying me with "what are you reading?" crap with my Kindle than I do paper. It's socially acceptable to interrupt someone with a real book in their hands, but not someone with an electronic device...

In other news, apparently I'm Scott.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMGP

When I buy books, I prefer paper. I've got a Nook and use it tons, but something like this, I want the palpable feel of it, and then have something to put on the bookshelf next to my 7 volumes of Devils Panties.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZealotOnAStick

(Regarding my previous post): Didn't realize until later that the link beneath the comic gives the opportunity to make that happen!

Turns out I am the Knifeketeer - pretty close!

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBird of Prey

i prefer paper.... also i got the knifeketeer

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenteranother scott

I prefer paper.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

I am the Knifekateer. I have absolutely no clue what to do with or about that. And now that I type this, I realise I have no clue about how to correctly spell what I am. Which actually fits, now that I think of it.

April 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLorna

Digital, because I got a Kindle for that specific reason. I have way too many paper books.
