How to Create a Compelling Villain

I have to make something perfectly clear. RICK IS NOT SCOTT ADAMS!! Rick is a real person, a person named Rick! First people think I'm Scott Adams, now people think Rick is. There are people in the world who are not Scott Adams!!

New "Asking the Wrong Guy" columns will be coming out every Tuesday night/Wednesday morning for the forseeable future.

Thank you for supporting Rick's column, for checking out my novel Off to Be the Wizard, (Available for Kindle (US, UK),Nook, old-school, dead tree form, DRM-free on Smashwords, and as a free sample), and for using my Amazon Affiliate links (US, UK, Canada).

"RICK IS NOT SCOTT ADAMS!! Rick is a real person..."

What are you implying about Scott Adams?!

May 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSeanF

Brilliant! The layers of jokes in panel 4 were outstanding, and I'd be remiss not to compliment the narration in panel 1.

Hopefully it'll turn out that I'm actually Scott Adams. I could use the money and fame and searing wit.

Interesting. I've never heard someone use length, width, and depth as the names of the three dimensions when talking about any physical object, much less a person. I'm curious which of those dimensions is which, now? Does he refer to his height as depth, like you would for a hole? Or is length his height, and he just never got away from using measurements that most people only use for infants? :p

Last line should be "I only wish it was true!"

Everyone's a critic ... lol

May 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNa Yeo

Well. That's depressing!

May 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRoto13

So... do we now start asking if Missy is Scott Adams?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterQort

Is Missy Scott Adams?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGary

Every panel pure gold - except panel 3.

DIAMOND-STUDDED PLATINUM!

I love you Scott . . .

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPaddy

Obviously this whole thing is a false flag operation to disguise the fact that either Jenkins or Missy is Scott Adams.

Scott Adams: The Anti-Spartacus

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoshua

Come on now. Suppose we all went around claiming to not be Scott Adams? Where would that leave us?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRubrick

Hang on .. 'Rick' or 'Ric'?

And, remind me, who is Scott Adams?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterstringph

I find it ironic and humorous that you continue to develop a three-dimensional villian in the Moon Emporer, but your hero remains quite flat in comparison. Rocket Hat seems good at only 3 three things: escaping from the moon men, beating up Rick, and not saying much (much like "Silent Bob").

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMikey

....and the Emperor of the Moon is a real person. A person called the Mandaric! I hope Ben Kingsley does him justice!

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNOT Scott Adams

I'm Scott Adams, and so are all of you!

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterScott Adams

Obviously, there is no actual person known as Scott Adams. He is the figment of imagination of a guy named Dilbert.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Obvious

I met Scott Adams, rock, and you sir are no Scott Adams.

There are people in the world who are not Scott Adams!!

Scott Adams doesn't exist. He is by his own admission a "moist robot".

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermayhemfunkster

Who the F!#k is Scot Adams ?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJames Y.

I thought the details were unimportant.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph M. Ditkoff

I know I'm out of touch when people start denying rumors that I've never heard of in the first place.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMarco

Oddly specific denial. I now believe all of your characters, you, and Rick are personalities of Scott Adams.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThestas

Oh this is really good !

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commentergrégory

What are you trying to say to us? Are you saying that "Scott Adams" is you? I would have picked a different pseudonym than "Scott Adams," but hey, I'm not drawing the comics.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterploeg

You have height when you're standing still, upright. This may vary in the course of a fight scene.

Congratulations on this three-dimensional comic. Did anybody not get the special viewing glasses yet?

Why is the Moon Emperor's father not Moon Emperor himself? Term limits? Promoted to Moon Pontifex and lord of the Silverberg? Or just doesn't want to have to be pummelled by Rocket Hat on a regular or semi-regular basis?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRobert Carnegie

For accuracy's sake, I don't believe anyone has ever seen Scott Adams and Scott Meyer (or Rick, for that matter) standing next to each other, which would conclusively disprove the rumor that they are the same person.

Just saying . . .

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterXuuths

He's not Scott Adams, he's a very naught boy!

Now you lot can just f#*k off!

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGoosemonster

Really, in the grand scheme of things, aren't we all Scott Adams, in our own way?

No. No we are not.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRich

Remember, always refer to Scott Meyer as "Scott Meyer". If you just say "Scott", people may think you're confusing him with Scott Adams, and you'll look like an idiot.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSteven desJardins

Na Yeo: Last line should be "I only wish it was true!"

Everyone's a critic ... lol

Everyone is indeed a critic. That should be, "I only wish it were true." :)

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSeanF

That's why the word "MEYER" is in such big letters in the headline?

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterResuna

I remember Scott Adams. He was the guy who made all of those cool text adventure games back in the 1980. I still remember playing "Pirate's Cove" on my Commodore 64. He's cool.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHarrkev

So these details ARE important...

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterqwerty

I finished "Off to be the Wizard" yesterday, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I cannot wait for a sequel. I love your style of humor and I will be suggesting this book to all of my friends!!

Well done sir!!

"For accuracy's sake, I don't believe anyone has ever seen Scott Adams and Scott Meyer (or Rick, for that matter) standing next to each other, which would conclusively disprove the rumor that they are the same person."

Superman, Clark Kent. Batman, Bruce Wayne. These guys have been pulling it off for, what, 70 years? We're prolly not gonna find out for sure for a while...

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterR. Dan

That sounds exactly like what someone who is Scott Adams would say. Unmask yourself, doppelganger!

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArekExcelsior

"Off to be the Wizard" is funny. I hope you sell a zillion copies.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJenny

To clear things up, you should do a strip that somehow includes both Rick and Scott Adams in the same panel.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

" ...that I was better than he."

As for folks wondering about the identity of Scott Adams, isn't he an obscure character actor who appeared in a single season four episode of Babylon 5?
