Ha! I can guess what that evidence might me. Just discovered your strip and have spent to better part of 2 days going through your archives (while at work, mind you). Funny, funny stuff.
Over the many years of posting in various formats from the days when the "internet" was only text to today's various flavors, I find many behaviors (note:US revolution spelling of behavior) puzzling as well. However, if I look at it in the light of a person's need to be seen as important or doing something that makes them "win" no matter how contrived, it starts to make more sense.
I think the urge to write a post saying "first" is closely related to the urge to run around making footprints in fresh snow. There's probably some deeply meaningful existential element behind it, if only we knew.
Maybe someone should start a new fad where you attempt to get the last post on a any given topic, rather than the first. That way those who wish to find silly ways to be competitive can do so, but those of us hoping to see insightful comments wont be bothered as much.
@Anne: I was just finished laughed at the strip when I read your comment and it made me think of Douglas Adams's bowl of petunia's, and that leads to the whale. Ah, the unending cycles of laughter.
Funny. Dal posted "first" and 8 comments followed about it being annoying and weird. It's like the "Don't respond to all" email sent in an email responding to all. Oops, this makes 9 comments.
I hate potentially making Mike right, but I can't let Thom AND ukulelepete both be right, so I'll just add: An as yet undisclosed number of posts away from last! Woo!
I really shouldn't post. The humorous irony of trigonman's post being last is great, but if no one is ever able to acknowledge it, it is just noise, rather than information.

Oh yeah...and "first" and all that crap...
I am still laughing.....and likely will be when I read this one again tomorrow.
"wise" indeed!
hilarious.
Not First!! And also wise... never ask for proof. I was sent a pic once....
Who highlighted everything in the O-Z cabinet? And what is that smell? Is that musk? OH MY GOD SCOTT YOU DIDN'T.
YOU DID.
Does anybody have any Shout? Or at least some Febreeze?
Whenever anyone says 'first', their comment invariably comes up 2nd or 3rd. Is this your doing Scott? If so I find it subtly funny.
**Gasp** Someone who posted "first" was actually first today?!
Can someone who has ever posted "first" on a comment board please explain to me the thrill you get from that. I personally just don't get it.
Scott, maybe you can do an instruction on posting to comment boards that pokes fun at this, imo, irrational behaviour.

I approached the "first" thing with mocking irony. Hard to convey that in text though...

To the rest of you: Last?
Scott should poop in the boss' drawers.

Funny comic too.
It's pretty clear that Dal was being sarcastic when he said 'first."
Sixteenth
Third from last.
Ha ha, beat you all there, or soon will.
Does this count as playing?
Last! haha, now, if you try to make me wrong, you will just make the guy above me right
Penultimate !

Last!
LAST!
Not the last post.
I really shouldn't post.
